I have been delighted to be associated with Loreburn Housing Association’s Management Committee for the past eight years, the last three of which I have been honoured to hold the post of Convener.
I presently work for NHS Dumfries & Galloway as a Community Development Worker in Wigtownshire and live in Newton Stewart. Born in the Castle Douglas area, my family moved to Penpont where I spent most of my adolescent life until I married Sheila, who I unfortunately lost in 2012.
Having worked in the Post Office in various roles, I eventually ended up behind a counter, but yearned for the outdoor life so in 1971 I joined Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary serving in Thornhill, Annan, Eaglesfield, Gretna, Dumfries CID, Newton Stewart and Stranraer Port Unit Special Branch, and Galloway Division CID where I retired from as Detective Inspector. During my Police service I studied Social Sciences with the Open University for five years and hold a BSc (Hons) Degree and a Diploma in Applied Social Sciences.
I have four grown up, married children who have given me ten wonderful grandchildren and although they live in various parts of Scotland, I try my best to see as much of them as possible.
My hobbies are mainly connected with football and I am Chairman of Newton Stewart Football Club who play in the South of Scotland League. Throughout my life I have been involved heavily in the communities where I have lived and taken an active part in committees of local galas, football clubs, church, community councils and youth organisations. My involvement in community organisations has given me great satisfaction in helping others, but none surpass the feeling of satisfaction, pride and pleasure that comes with being a part of Loreburn Housing Association.
